Why I Love Eating Here, in the Hudson Valley

I love eating food in the Hudson Valley. I love eating food, period! It's a running joke amongst those who know me-- I am an always eating, always food-obsessing zombie. Thoughts related to food probably use up more than half my brain power, and I wouldn't be surprised if I burned more calories thinking about food than I get from eating! I know, not possible...you'd be surprised, though.

When some one thinks and talks about food that much, her housemate is bound to say, "You should write a blog." And really, the time I spend in the kitchen waiting for potatoes to roast could be much improved for me, by writing this, here. On a more serious note, I believe that the myriad farmers whose food I eat every day deserve major shout-outs, and I am excited to do that for them as I share my local food journey with you.

Why I love eating here, in the Hudson Valley:
Probably because it's the first place that I have lived that has farmland! NYC is really lacking in that department. Or because the first farmer I met here left me deeply inspired-- something about the raspberries he fed me. Also...it's pretty sexy that I can list the names of friends who have grown my food. I can even taste their sweat...for real...

But as much as I love the Hudson Valley, which I do from the bottom of my heart, it's less about where I eat than it is about how I eat. It is about eating here, wherever here may be. And as much as I love eating here because "here" might have fresh food, I love eating here as a political act, more. I am learning, intimately, the strengths and weaknesses of our local food system, as I plow through trying to make a complete diet, year round. But more than all that, I recognize that I am only one person, or we are only 10, or 1,000, and the scope of our work must be greater than our own kitchens.  My diet must be the food that fuels me to do larger work.

With that said, I am off to eat! I am looking forward to sharing my story about eating local food in the Hudson Valley, and to hearing from you about how we can work together for the future of food.

With love and parsnips,
Marigo

  1. Dearest Marigo,
You go girl! All of this talk about eating is making me hungry! I'm going to go make some local potatoes, parsnips, beets. I'm not looking forward to it at all.

  2. Hey Marigo,

Love the blog! I'm going to help Katy eat the roots now. I think with some butter and salt, we will have a delicious meal in no time! Or, no more than an hour.

  3. How lovely to be your mother; the wait (36 years) was well worthwhile. How lovely to read your first blog; it left me with a smile!

(In case you (and any other readers) are not familiar with the musical Bye Bye Birdie, I must add that the comment above is derived from a tune from the show, an outdated song with very "unfeminist" lyrics. I've improved upon them, greatly.)

Love, hugs and all that jazz,
    You-know-who

thanks for putting the way you are down in words, or at least partly, and in a way that we can visit and continue to learn from.

  6. Thanks Mar for being such an inspiring role model! If y'all are sick of baked beets with olive oil & rosemary, I made some quick picked beets yesterday and they're super yummy. Basically vinegar, salt, water, and dill (ok, so that's not in season, but you could add dill seeds or whatever else would be tasty). If you want the recipe, let me know! Love, iara
